5 Ways to Support Employees with Mental Health Challenges
Every situation is unique, which means there’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to supporting employees with mental health concerns. These five tools can help you consider: What influence do I have? What can I do? And how do I communicate effectively with my employee, team, and organization?
1. Notice and respond early
Be alert to changes in behavior—such as fatigue, headaches, withdrawal from colleagues, or reduced productivity. Recognize the signals and show your employee you’re there for them.
2. Open the conversation about work
If you see someone struggling, make yourself approachable. Create room for dialogue, listen actively, and show understanding. These conversations can feel difficult, so preparation helps.
3. Support self-direction
Encourage employees to take ownership of their situation. Offer coaching and space so they can explore solutions and opportunities themselves.
4. Explore work adjustments together
Discuss what tasks are manageable and what support is needed. Agree on practical, short-term adjustments where possible, set clear expectations, and review progress regularly.
5. Seek professional help when absence is a risk
If health issues are likely to affect attendance, stay in touch consistently. Don’t wait—bring in an occupational health or safety professional early to provide support.
